Classical Conversation review sheets OR copyright infringement???

Well...after almost two years of posting review sheets, Classical Conversations actually contacted me about my post last Monday.  They are concerned that I am violating copyright issues.

I'm working on refuting this, but I am going to pause posting this week.  I never meant or wanted to use the CC information incorrectly, so hope that I can continue.  I don't think what I have created has done anything other than support Classical Conversations and their customers who pay money to be a part of CC.

Looking at my "stats" on the blog it seems that something was on Facebook last week (which is how CC was alerted I'm guessing?)  Since I'm not on Facebook, has anyone seen something? Is there a link or post?

  1. Kelly, may I offer a different perspective? This happened to me last year with a music supplement I put out that had CC's name on it. After having a very graceful email exchange with CC I happily took down my materials and then uploaded them to CC Connected. There is so much rampant abuse of copyright, and sometimes -- with the best of intentions -- we don't even know we have violated copyright. You can contact me if you want to talk more! 1. Thanks for your perspective! I appreciate it. I am not on CC Connected and won't be since we are not affiliated with a CC group right now. (We moved...no established group could fit all my kiddos! :) Taking down the review work, would pretty much shut the blog down....but maybe that's what the Lord has in store for me! One less thing to do. We will see! ;)

    2. I see both sides of this: when we were part of a group, I LOVED CC Connected, but now we are moving to Zambia as missionaries and can't afford the $60 monthly fee. Sometimes, the business side frustrates me, but I understand they want to make the profits from their work. (I still buy more than I should from CC directly.)

  3. Will you let us know if you decide to take them off? Then I'll start printing them!

  4. Oh no, I LOVE your blog. I'm a 3rd year CC mom and now tutor and your items are so helpful and I use your site constantly, even with a CC Connected subscription. I hope all gets worked out.

  5. I love your Blog. I have homeschooled for 18 years and just switched to the classical approach for my youngest 2. I will be praying for God's guidance on both side. You are an amazing blessing!

  6. I am so sorry you have to deal with that. This is such a great resource and you are just trying to share with people for free. It is not like you are making money off CC's material.

  7. I'm sorry about this. I do not feel like you are abusing their information at all. You do not take credit for their stuff and you are not charging for these things. I actually feel like it is greedy on their part. We pay tuition and fees to attend a cc communtiy, we purchase their books and supplies, we pay for their apps, and we pay to use their website.

Mary, who commented above, had an interesting thought about you posting this on cc connected. However, only those who were PAYING for that service would have access to it. And then in a way, they would be getting paid so people could view YOUR stuff. Greedy. It makes me angry that they are making an issue about this.

Thank you for creating tools like this for cc families. I really appreciate the time and effort you put in to it. Please keep us posted on this issue. I will pray for a fair and hones resolution.

  8. Yes, I expect the CC Admin. simply wants you to funnel through the CC Connected site. At a tutor training I attended, we discussed how it is a potentially unfair expectation that we upload what we've made free-of-charge so that the organization can charge for access to it, especially if we don't wish to barter in the share site. It may be possible to simply remove the CC name from your documents. You clearly use the format, but with intentional gaping holes. :)

I continue to be grateful for your attractive and useful worksheets. Perhaps the added volume is due to the school term starting, and word-of-mouth ballooning. I've certainly spread your site around in my community.

  11. A friend posted your sheets on Facebook and I was so impressed I got out of bed to print them, only to find you had to remove them. I am a member of CC connected and haven't found anything like these! These are very useful sheets for us and I wish there was some way you could still print something like these, because I won't do nearly as good a job as you have. In the meantime, I will try and hope it's okay if I infringe on your idea. Thank you so much for showing these and sharing them during the time you did.

    1. Hi Lana! I have not removed them, as I have yet to be shown what copyright law I have broken. You should still be able to download and print. If not, let me know and I will email them to you. Send me your email via the "contact me" above. Thx!!! :)

  12. I just came across your blog this morning, and was so thrilled! We are in our first year of using CC! We are not a part of CC Connected due to not being a part of a community. So often times, I have to look for other options. . I hope that you're able to get everything worked out. But we've printed everything that we can just in case. :)

  13. Kelly, I LOVE your sheets. They have been a huge blessing to my family. I am not on CC connected because there is TOO MUCH stuff. Your review sheets simplify our routine and my kids really enjoy doing them each morning! I hope this becomes a non-issue and you can continue making them available. Peace.

  14. I am unable to participate in CC community for several reasons. We can not afford the 60/month fee. I love your sheets!!! I will send you my email so that I may continue receive your sheets! I read someone say take off the Classical Conversations wording... maybe they would just leave you alone??? Thank you for how you have helped us this year thus far

  15. You are so talented, and I appreciate your worksheets so much. Perhaps CC would be willing to gift you a subscription to CC Connected this year since there are so many of us enriched by your creativity!

  19. I LOVE these sheets - they save me SO much time and frustration! I'm grateful for them. I too am on CCC and have NOT seen anything this well presented. Thank you for sharing your time!

  20. My dd loves doing your sheets...and I don't see the problem with copyright....you don't profit from these!
There are others who do sell CC support materials, such as Wisdom and Righteousness Lapbooks....I wonder why they are allowed to sell stuff with the CC material within, and you're the troubled one.

I sincerely hope you'll be able to get the Weeks 13-24 Fill Ins finished.....she loves to do these before tackling the Blanks.

  21. Any updates on if youbwill be able to post 13-24? They have been so very helpful!! Thank you!!#

  22. I hope this works out. We are not a part of the CC community due to living a long ways from any current groups and budget reasons, but I love their memory work and use it every day. So sad to see they are giving you trouble for something you are offering for free to support their communities!
I agree with the posters above that they shouldn't profit by their website subscriptions from your work. Maybe you could post a template for those of us who are desperate, so we can fill in weekly questions? ;) These sheets have been amazing and really simplified my copywork routine!

  23. I really appreciate your worksheets. Because my daughter's health concerns I had to stop attending our local community. Your worksheets really helped me stay accountable and on track. I am also a fellow blogger and view what we do as a part of my ministry. I pray that all things work out in your favor. I believe part of the problem is that people may be monetarily rewarded for sharing information that could possibly be seen as copyright infringement. I have invested more than a $1,000 in CC and to invest $60/month in CC connected seems ridiculous to me. I think they should establish an online community and charge us a reasonable rate for CC connected. If possible could you email me directly weeks 13-24? Many blessings to you and your family.

  24. I'm a tutor and CC is going the WRONG ROUTE. They need to embrace open source style community sharing instead of trying to lock down everything. My husband is an open source software developer and I assure you it is quite a profitable way of working. CC admins if you are reading this, please contact me and I will be glad to refute any and all of your points and respectfully tell you where you can put your terrible ideas and tendencies. :)
